International Women's Day
The month of March: we all associate it with the beginning of Spring and the return of Daylight Savings Time. However, this month has also one other significant day to commemorate: March 8th, International Women’s Day. A day that not only celebrates the social, economic, and political achievements of women, but also brings attention to the ongoing struggle for equality that continues today around the world. In recognition of this special day, I would like to share with you the women who have inspired and shaped me into the person I am today.
My story begins at home: firstly, my mother, Nuhad Sabra, was—and still is even after her passing—my greatest inspiration. Coming from a Middle-Eastern household in mid-century Lebanon, my mother was raised in a very traditional and conservative way. In spite of this, she raised my siblings and I to lead with passion and courage in whatever we do. Secondly, I am also deeply inspired by my three beautiful daughters who challenge me daily to continually push myself and my perspective.
In addition to my family, I am also inspired daily by the unsung female heroes that are at every corner in this world—be it the mother that is struggling to create that healthy balance in her home and work life, or the woman/person that is struggling to have a decent life against all the injustice, instability, or discrimination they face.
In my 15 years as a Pilates instructor, I would also be remiss if I do not mention the bold resilience of my clients. Thank you for choosing me to be a part of your health journey and for inspiring me always with your continuous determination to embrace your strength from within.
Thus, as we all strive to make the world a better place, let us take a moment to recall Jane Goodall, who famously said: “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
And I would add: that difference is not only going to affect your life, but will impact everyone around you. Happy International Woman’s Day!
